A delegation from the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) comprised of safeguards and nuclear security teams visited South Korea recently where they took part in the 11th NSSC/KINAC-FANR Technical Meeting, during which they met with South Korean partners to exchange regulatory updates and expertise and discuss topics relating to nuclear security and safeguards, among other technical aspects.
FANR met with South Korea's Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC) to discuss cooperation and current trends in nuclear security, exchange experience in conducting nuclear security inspections and exercises, as well as discussions regarding FANR's regulatory framework for nuclear security.
The delegation also met with partners from the Korea Institute of Nuclear Non-proliferation and Control (KINAC), where the two parties discussed cooperation in matters relating to safeguards, including joint studies, international frameworks for non-proliferation at nuclear fuel facilities, training opportunities, and other technical aspects.
FANR additionally provided its Korean partners with operational experiences and lessons learned from supporting the safeguards implementations at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, the first nuclear power plant to operate in the Middle East whose four Korean-supplied reactors were developed in close cooperation with South Korean nuclear entities. Additionally, FANR presented its revisions to REG-08, relating to the protection of advanced nuclear technology from both physical and cyber threats.
Furthermore, FANR's delegation toured various facilities in the city of Daejeon, including a cyber security testbed facility, a fuel fabrication facility that provides the nuclear fuel for the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, and the International Nuclear Nonproliferation and Security Academy (INSA).
The UAE and Republic of South Korea have a long-standing nuclear partnership dating back to 2009, cooperating in matters relating to nuclear reactor design, nuclear safety, capacity building, research and development, exchange of expertise and operational experience, and other technical aspects.
