​At FANR we create regulations to establish requirements with which all operators must comply. We also develop regulatory guides as a means of providing detailed and specific information on acceptable approaches to satisfying the requirements established in these regulations. These activities are in line with international standards and guidance material.​​

Regulatory guides are not substitutes for regulations and compliance with regulatory guides is not mandatory. However methods of complying with the requirements in regulations that differ from the guidance set forth by the regulatory guides may be acceptable if assurance is provided that all the requirements are met.​​
